Introduction

The rollout of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT) is enabling organisations and individuals to collect more real-world data in real-time. Artificial intelligence (AI) systems can use this data to become increasingly sophisticated and capable. In the telecoms industry, AI is enabling mobile operators to improve both connectivity and their customers’ experience. By using AI to optimise and automate networks, mobile operators can provide better services and enable more people to become connected.

At the same time, mobile operators are leveraging anonymised and aggregated mobile data with AI to deliver valuable solutions that help governments and public agencies to address pressing global challenges, such as climate change and pollution, the need for better healthcare and transport, and sustainable development. These tools can also be used to better prepare and respond effectively to extreme weather, natural disasters and infectious diseases.

The AI for Impact initiative is promoting the best-in-class effective solutions to many of the world’s most pressing challenges. Many of those use cases can be found in GSMA publication: The Mobile Industry and AI. In this portfolio, we captured the lessons learned from several successful high-profile projects, demonstrating how big data analytics and AI can be used to build a better society.
