Sustainable Business Models
Mobile big data solutions have proven their proficiency as a decision support tool for governments and humanitarian agencies, transforming how they respond during times of crises and the services they can provide citizens to improve their lives. Our case studies demonstrate how the insights delivered can improve policy planning and accelerate response efforts, ultimately saving lives. Covid-19 generated a massive increase in awareness of the utility of MBD in supporting evidence-based decision-making. Now the question is: how can we create the right environment for mobile big data solutions to thrive sustainably? Meeting this challenge will require a long-term strategy that embeds investment, resources, skills acquisition and feedback mechanisms that aren’t feasible for one-off initiatives. To deliver scale and maximise social benefit, there is a need to move from promising one-off projects to a fully operational production service where insights are delivered on a continuous, efficient and predictable basis. The adoption of a sustainable business model at the right point in the lifecycle of a mobile big data initiative is a key enabler to realise this objective.
In report, GSMAi researched the fundamental components that drive sustainability in mobile big data services and explored the types of business models that are most relevant to mobile big data applications. Since the report’s creation in 2018, there has been an acceleration in understanding of MBD’s ability to deliver value for society and a proliferation of use cases. However, to truly realize the benefits of MBD in the long-term business models need to become sustainable.
