Introduction

Big data and AI are shaping our future

“AI can be a force for good that helps to solve critical challenges. The mobile industry is committed to connecting everyone to a better future and is well placed to contribute to this evolving field.” Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA

With the rollout of 5G and the Internet of Things (IoT), more and more sensors, devices, machinery and vehicles are becoming connected, enabling cellular networks to generate an increasingly wide range and amount of data. Consequently, this Big Data is the fuel of all Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that are becoming increasingly sophisticated and capable.

Big Data analyses large volumes of data to find patterns, while AI uses algorithms to make decisions and learn, often utilizing Big Data’s insights to enhance its capabilities. Together, they optimise data-driven decision-making across various domains.

Within the telecoms sector, mobile operators increasingly deploy AI solutions to enhance connectivity, increase energy efficiency, improve cybersecurity, reduce fraud, offer a better customer experience, and enable better product and service development.

In parallel, mobile operators and their trusted partners develop solutions that create impact for a better society, from enabling better city planning, combating climate change, improving disaster response, increasing social inclusion, to supporting sustainable growth, thereby helping to achieve the UN’s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals).

The telecom industry is committed to nurturing the development of big data analytics and AI that create impact, in an ethical and responsible manner, while respecting individuals’ privacy. Being a custodian of this data is a responsibility the mobile industry takes very seriously. The responsible use of data has been a key part of the GSMA AI for Impact initiatives since its inception.
